Hyperpigmentation refers to the formation of dark patches of skin compared to the surrounding area. Hyperpigmentation is most commonly the result of increased melanin production by skin cells known as melanocytes. Melanin is a pigment that is responsible for skin color and explains the wide variety of skin colors across the globe. Pigmentation issues include unwanted birthmarks, rosacea, redness and melasma. A variety of conditions/ situations increase melanin production and thus hyperpigmentation, including specific medications (ex. Some chemotherapy drugs, birth control pills, photosensitizing drugs), pregnancy, Addison’s disease (endocrine disorder), sun exposure/ sunburns, having darker skin tones, etc.
