Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that normally affects the face. Rosacea appears as small, red, pustules that occur in “flares,” meaning the symptoms are present for weeks to months, disappear, and then reappear. Typically, rosacea is not dangerous but the appearance can be considered unsightly and impact the quality of life.
Being fair-skinned and having Celtic or Scandinavian ancestors are risk factors for developing rosacea. Most individuals who develop rosacea are between the ages of 30-50.
Although the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, some factors that exacerbate symptoms include: spicy foods, H. pylori infection, cathelicidin, hot coffee or tea, food containing cinnamaldehyde (ex. cinnamon, chocolate, tomatoes, and citrus).
