Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin. Stretch marks are caused by tearing of the dermis during periods of rapid growth of the body, such as pregnancy or from rapid weight loss or gain.
Cortisone is a hormone that is physiologically produced by the adrenal glands, however an excess production of cortisone can result in decreased skin elasticity and thus stretch marks. Stretch marks due to elevated cortisone levels can be seen in conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Marfan’s syndrome.
