Why LightSheer® Laser Hair Removal?

In the past methods for hair removal included plucking, shaving, waxing, electrolysis and chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, all of them are time consuming and are associated with high cost.

With ChillTip™, the skin is cooled before and during the laser hair removal treatment. It is then compressed and the laser beam is directed to the skin. With HIT™, the vacuum gently draws skin into the hand piece, stretching it thin and pulling the target closer to the energy source.

How Many Treatments are Needed?

The number of LightSheer Laser Hair Removal treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors – hormones, hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle, etc. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time and actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. LightSheer by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

What are the possible side effects?

Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. If the skin has been tanned or exposed to the sun, cut-like marks can appear on the skin that resolve on their own. Consult with your medical esthetician for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?

The appearance of the treated area following treatment varies from patient to patient, depending on the characteristics of the patient and treatment given. During the treatment, some hairs will shed from the follicle immediately, while the remaining will shed in the following weeks. Transient redness and swelling around the hair follicle may appear immediately after the treatment, but are in fact, positive results indicating the follicle’s response to the treatment. Following the treatment, you will be provided with guidelines, namely in terms of sun exposure.

How does it work?

LightSheer® laser system
The LightSheer® uses a state-of-the-art 805nm diode laser, which ensures safety for all skin types. Repeated laser pulses target existing hair, creating a direction of energy into the hair follicles that prevent future growth. The LightSheer® allows your physician to truly customize treatment for your hair type, skin type and lifestyle by utilizing 2 different handpieces and technologies.

HIT™ technology
The High-Speed Integrated Technology (HIT™) incorporates suction to elevate and stretch the skin. In doing so, the laser achieves maximum absorption into hair follicles and fast coverage of large areas, which minimize the sensation of heat.

ChillTip™ technology
The ChillTip™ technology uses a proprietary cooling system to momentarily numb the skin to minimize Pain, while compressing the handpiece to the skin to rotate the follicle and enable better results.

What should I expect?

Multiple treatments are required to achieve permanent hair reduction. This is due to the increased effect of the laser on hair in the early growth stage (anagen). Not all the hairs are in the same phase at a given time.

Information prior to your visit:

Avoid sun exposure for two weeks prior to the treatment. Inform the medical technician if your skin has tanned. Sun exposed/ tanned skin is susceptible to the formation of “scratch-like” marks on the skin that resolve on their own.
Hair should be cleanly shaven.
Do not wear makeup on the treated area the day of treatment.
No sun-tanning or self-tanners 4 weeks prior to treatment.
- Includes spray tans, tanning lotions, tanning beds, sun exposure, etc.
No waxing, plucking or tweezing at least 2 weeks prior to laser hair removal treatment.
- Some body parts may require a longer wait time.
Avoid treatments that may irritate the skin for 1-2 weeks prior to treatment (depilatories, harsh chemicals, etc.).
Notify clinic with any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment.
History of herpes or cold sores may require an anti-viral prescription prior to treatment.

post-care

Information for after your visit:

Avoid sun exposure and use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen.
Redness and perifollicular edema (looks like a rash/bug bites) are not uncommon and resolve with time.
Bruising and swelling are less common but may occur and will resolve with time.
Hair may take up to 2 weeks to fall out.
- Hair growth after the treatment is not a sign that the treatment did not work. The hair that was already in the follicle has been targeted and needs to be released to the surface.
Avoid heat – hot tubs, saunas, etc. for 1-2 days.
Avoid skin irritants (examples below) a few days post-treatment.
- Products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents, etc.
Do not wax or pluck between treatments.
Notify clinic of any concerns (blistering, excessive redness/swelling, etc.)
Laser hair removal requires a series of treatments. The number of treatments depends on body location, type of hair, hormones, etc.
Consult with clinic about when to resume skin care regime.
