Keratosis
Keratosis refers to a condition characterized by the thickening of the outer layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. This thickening can occur in various forms, leading to different types of keratosis.
Here are some common types:
- Actinic Keratosis: This is a precancerous condition caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or tanning beds. It appears as rough, scaly patches on sun-exposed areas of the skin.
- Seborrheic Keratosis: These are benign, non-cancerous growths that can vary in color and size. They often appear as raised, wart-like lesions and typically develop with age.
- Keratosis Pilaris: This common skin condition results in small, rough bumps, usually on the upper arms, thighs, face, or buttocks. It occurs due to the buildup of keratin around hair follicles.
- Pilar Keratosis: Similar to keratosis pilaris, this condition involves the formation of keratin plugs in hair follicles, leading to small, hard bumps.

Treating Keratosis
Ageless Beauty Laser & Spa recommends laser to treat and remove keratosis.
For seborrheic keratosis, which often appears as non-cancerous growths, treatment is usually not necessary unless the lesions become bothersome. In such cases, options include cryotherapy (freezing the growth), curettage (scraping it off), or laser therapy.
Actinic keratosis, a pre-cancerous condition caused by sun exposure, requires medical intervention. Treatments may include topical medications such as 5-fluorouracil or imiquimod, which help destroy abnormal cells. Cryotherapy and photodynamic therapy are also effective in managing this condition.
Keratosis pilaris, commonly known as “chicken skin,” often improves with regular exfoliation and moisturization. Over-the-counter creams containing alpha-hydroxy acids or urea can help smooth the skin’s texture.
It’s essential to consult a dermatologist for accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment recommendations, especially for actinic keratosis, to prevent potential progression to skin cancer. Regular skin checks can also aid in early detection and management of keratosis.
