Nail Fungus
Dermatophytes are the fungi most commonly responsible for causing nail fungus. They are specialized organisms that live off of keratin which is the main component of nails and skin. Everyone is at risk for infection because fungus is present everywhere in the environment. Nail infection is caused by contact with dermatophytes. Common sources of infection include swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail spas. Tight fitting shoes and nail trauma can also lead to infection. Genetic susceptibility, poor health and increasing age are also factors that increase the risk of nail infection.

Nail Fungus TREATMENT OPTIONS
Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, can be stubborn and uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are several effective treatment options available:
1. Topical Treatments
- Antifungal Nail Lacquers: These are applied directly to the infected nail. Common options include ciclopirox and amorolfine.
- Creams and Ointments: Over-the-counter antifungal creams can be used, though they may be less effective for deep infections.
2. Oral Medications
- Terbinafine (Lamisil): This is a common prescription medication that helps clear the infection by targeting the fungus from within.
- Itraconazole (Sporanox): Another oral option, effective for various fungal infections, but may require liver function monitoring.
3. Home Remedies
- Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antifungal properties, tea tree oil can be applied to the affected area to help combat the infection.
- Vicks VapoRub: Some studies suggest that applying this mentholated topical ointment may provide relief and help clear the infection.
4. Laser Therapy
- Laser Treatments: A newer option, laser therapy targets and destroys the fungus using focused light beams. This method is painless and can be effective for stubborn cases.
5. Surgical Options
- Nail Removal: In severe cases, removing the infected nail may be necessary to allow a healthy nail to grow back.
6. Prevention Tips
- Keep Nails Dry: Moisture promotes fungal growth, so ensure your nails are dry after washing.
- Wear Breathable Footwear: Choose shoes made of natural materials that allow airflow.
- Avoid Nail Trauma: Protect nails from injury to reduce the risk of infection.
Consulting with a healthcare professional is essential for determining the best treatment approach tailored to your specific situation.
